Jazz Dance Performance A Big Hit by David Harrison (The Center Post / February 2006)
|
On Saturday, January 14, at 2:00 p.m. the students of the Virginia Davis School of Dance presented a jazz dance program entitled "Ready Set Dance" in the Grand Hall. The performers were all middle school or high school students.
The theme of the program was Broadway Bound and it featured dances and songs from recent (and sometimes not-so-recent) hit musicals from Broadway. Among the latter was the Steam Heat number from "The Pajama Game". This number, which was first performed close to twenty years ago, has become a classic among Broadway musical performances. The singer-dancers performed it with great verve and precision. It is not an easy number to do because it requires close timing and coordination - and the youthful cast handled it extremely well.
There were many other numbers on the program, all managed very effectively. It was clear that many hours of rehearsal had been put into producing a show which had real zest and sparkle. It was sometimes hard to remember that even the oldest performers were high school students - not professional actresses.
The near-capacity audience clearly enjoyed every minute of the show - and demonstrated its feeling with frequent applause. |
